This is a replica of a basket Anne discovered in a barn in Eastern Kentucky over 30 years ago. It is a woven container about one gallon in size with tightly woven sides and a well vented bottom. The handle was fashioned from an oak tobacco stick and hung with a piece of leather. When Anne inquired about what the basket was, she was told it was a “medicine basket” used to gather herbs then hung in the barn in the same basket for drying. Anne has a few handles available for this and then it will be retired. Come join us! Supplies in the amount of $9 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Do you have what it takes to sell your manuscripts? All best-selling authors had to start somewhere; a number of them, in fact, never wrote fiction of any kind prior to retirement. Whether you write short stories or novels, or have even yet to begin, this workshop provides the direction you’ll need to pursue publication. Taught by a professional editor who’s worked with such noted authors as Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates, this workshop teaches the bare basics of writing to sell and presents an opportunity to meet other students who are also just starting out on this exciting endeavor. Bring a two-page double-spaced sample of your work to class and receive an objective, yet tactful, professional evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer,
including suggested areas for improvement.

investment of time; however, specific
techniques can make the task far more
manageable. “Creating Your Novel” offers a step-by-step methodology to help you produce a marketable novel. You’ll formulate a novel outline, create a cast of characters,
decide which point of view and structural form are most appropriate, and write an opening paragraph. Demonstrated techniques are easily adaptable to your own work. You’ll learn:
• How to create realistic characters
• What is the universal “formula” for a
successful novel
• How to target specific publishers before
you even start writing

Beautiful prose isn’t the sole determinant of a novel’s success. You can likely write well enough to sell already, but aren’t meeting the publisher’s needs. In this workshop, a professional editor tells you what publishers want. You’ll learn:
• How to keep your submissions out of the
editor’s “slush pile”
• How to overcome “writer’s block”
• How to get editors to ask for your
submission
If you’ve already completed your novel, use what you’ll learn to produce a more marketable
rewrite.

Watch a professional editor who’s worked with such noted authors as Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Lawrence Block, and others evaluate your manuscript. Learn the likely reason for earlier rejections and how to correct the problem. Bring the first five double-spaced pages of your short story or novel manuscript. If you prefer not to have your own writing reviewed, you’ll benefit by listening to other critiques. Don’t be afraid of constructive feedback; the purpose here is to encourage rather than discourage.

With new technology, however, self-publication has become a low-cost solution for many writers who wish to target a specific audience and maintain complete control over their finished book. With as little as a $400 investment, your professional-quality book can be listed on Amazon.com and ready to market around the world within a few weeks. Learn how to make the most of this exciting new technology and avoid traditional publishers if your situation lends itself well to self publication. Textbook included.
